The Food Education Working Group is about education and the transfer of knowledge about food and nutrition.
In particular, this food education takes place in daycare centers, schools, and other public institutes, as well as in adult education.
For example, we are looking into the questions of how we can broaden the use of our school garden offerings and how we can enable the use of the external school garden in the Ostpark for schoolchildren and after-school care groups.
In the following, we offer a very specific overview of our topics:
1. Report from the School Garden
Unfortunately, our school garden project did not remain unaffected by “COVID-19”. After the schools in Hessen closed, we first had to wait and see. We had hoped for a fast improvement of the situation, but the timetable was delayed. The students from the Herderschule, who had already been looking forward to gardening, will be able to start gardening after the summer holidays. The beds were planted in April – in compliance with hygiene and distance regulations – by hard-working helpers from the working group and under the guidance of our gardener.
Since June, interested members of the neighbourhood have also had access to the garden. With prior registration, the hobby gardeners are allowed to work in the garden once a week, with guidance and direction, and, of course, share the harvest among themselves. This opportunity has generated such enthusiasm that we will continue offering it until the end of the year. Starting in mid-September, the students of the Herderschule will be able to prepare a separate planting area for the start of the next gardening season and, hopefully, plant seeds for some autumn or winter vegetables. The working group is currently exploring how to design the project for the upcoming year so it can support both the school groups and the very committed neighbourhood participants. It is conceivable that there could be a collaboration between the Vegetable Heroes, with their concept of a permaculture island, and the members of the neighbourhood.
The focus of the project continues to be on working with educational groups, so that we are primarily focusing on attracting new school classes and other possible educational groups.
2. Funding for Next Year (Current Status)
- The results of a working meeting on possible funding sources were presented and discussed. Further ideas were collected.
- The next steps were discussed and responsibilities were clarified.
3. Cooperation with Ackerdemia Association (more materials, new planting fields – new costs?)
- Next year, we would like to continue working together with our cooperation partner Ackerdemia e.V., a NGO that hier vielleicht ein Link oder noch ein halber Satz mit einer Erläuterung, was das ist?
- The City School Garden Project is to be expanded to include more classes and planting areas. This must be coordinated with both the Green Space Office of the Frankfurt City council and Ackerdemia
- We discussed how the materials from the group ‘Gemüse Ackerdemie’ can be better integrated into our project in the upcoming year.
4. Possible Cooperation with Umweltlernen Association (Environmental Learning Assoc.)
- Representatives of the Umweltlernen e.V. have already taken part in the meeting of our Working Group so that an exchange is possible
- The possibility of setting a regular date, e.g. every 6-8 weeks with Umweltlernen, in order to enable a more targeted exchange, was discussed (more details are to be determined in the future).
- In the long term, cooperation seems to make sense. Parallel structures are not desired. The idea of networking among Food Councils is paramount – existing structures should be used.

Das Projekt ‚Schulgarten Frankfurt Ost‘
Der Arbeitskreis Ernährungsbildung beschäftigt sich bereits seit 2018 hauptsächlich mit dem Projekt des „Schulgartens Frankfurt Ost“ für SchülerInnen und Familien nach dem Vorbild der Berliner Gartenarbeitsschulen/Schul-Umwelt-Zentren. Die Stadt Frankfurt unterstützt dieses Vorhaben: Für das Projekt wurde 2019 das Areal des ehemaligen Hauptschulgartens im Frankfurter Ostpark zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Fläche konnte aufgrund des schnell wachsenden Interesses im Jahr 2021 noch erweitert werden.
Die Teilnehmenden können im Schulgarten unter fachlicher und pädagogischer Anleitung verschiedene Gemüsearten anbauen, verarbeiten und verzehren. Ziel ist es, nicht nur die Wertschätzung von Lebensmitteln und das Verständnis für den Nahrungsmittelanbau bei Kindern zu steigern, sondern auch die Kompetenzen im Bereich Ernährung zu erweitern. Unterstützt wird die Umsetzung durch das Grünflächenamt sowie unseren Kooperationspartner, den Ackerdemia e.V., der mit seinem Bildungsprogramm GemüseAckerdemie bundesweite Erfahrungen in der Umsetzung ökologischer Schulgärten mitbringt.

Wir sind Nachhaltiger Lernort Frankfurt!
Der Schulgarten Frankfurt Ost ist seit diesem Jahr, gemeinsam mit anderen tollen Vereinen und Initiativen, wie u.a. ‚Umweltlernen e.V‘ und den Kolleginnen und Kollegen der GemüseheldInnen, als ‚Nachhaltiger Lernort Frankfurt‘ in der 2. Auflage des BNE-Netzwerks „Nachhaltigkeit lernen in Frankfurt” aufgenommen worden. Weitere Informationen hierzu sind hier abrufbar.
Wir sind im Historischen Museum!
Als Teil der Stadtlabor-Ausstellung „Die Stadt und das Grün – Gärtnern jetzt!“ sind wir mit unserem Schulgarten und seiner historischen Bedeutung noch bis zum 10. Oktober ausgestellt. Für alle, die lieber vor Ort mehr zum Schulgarten erfahren möchten, ist hier auch ein Audio-Guide im Rahmen der Ausstellung verfügbar.
